Pizza is one of the most popular foods around the world, and for good reason. Few can deny the deliciousness of melted cheese on flatbread. Here in the UK at Hot Stones Pizzas, pizza generally brings to mind thoughts of pepperoni and mozzarella cheese. But how people like their pizza has some surprising varieties from one country to the next. Here are some of the ways that pizza is enjoyed across the world.

Brazil

In Brazil, pizza is served on a thin crust with a barely-there layer of sauce or even ketchup. Popular toppings include carrots, beets, and raisins, but the most popular topping of all is peas.

Australia

Perhaps not surprisingly, Aussies have a unique take on the pizza. They top theirs with local meats such as crocodile, kangaroo and emu, and replace red marinara sauce with barbecue sauce.

Russia

A popular flavor of pizza is Russia is the MOCKBA, topped with a fishy assortment of mackerel, tuna, sardines, salmon and onions. It is usually served cold, probably because it is too hard for a delivery boy to keep a pizza warm in Russian winters.

Germany

Russians are not the only Europeans who enjoy their pizza with fish. Canned tuna is a perennial favorite on top of pizza in Germany, called “Thunfisch Pizza.” Tuna is also a popular topping in Ireland. These three countries must be on to something!

Sweden

Swedes really love pizza. A completely normal flavor of pizza, according to Swedes, is banana curry pizza. it can be found in just about any pizza joint in Stockholm. Another popular topping in Sweden is kebab meat.

India

Indian pizzas tend to be topped with the typical ingredients in Indian food, such as tandoori chicken, creamy masala sauce and paneer cheese. They also like to throw on mutton, pickled ginger and tofu.

France

Leave it to the French to turn something as simple as the pizza into a fine dining dish. The “tarte flambée” replaces traditional tomato sauce with crème fraîche and is traditionally topped with onions and lardons or bacon.

Japan

Japan, home of all things weird, off course has a unique take on pizza. The popular “mayo jaga” pizza comes with mayonnaise, bacon, corn, potatoes, and onion. Japanese Pizza Huts serve the “Winter Double King,” loaded with king crab, broccoli and beef, with crust stuffed with mayonnaise and shrimp. Yum?
